BirthdayPerks.my (“we”) is a community-maintained list of birthday perks in Malaysia. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, and what you can do about it. It follows Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA). Questions? Email hello@birthdayperks.my.
What we collect
If you just browse
You don’t need an account. We keep a few small things on your device: your language, light or dark theme, the birthday you type into the planner (day and month only), and a note that you’ve visited before. That note lets us count each visitor once. On our side the count is just a number and a time, with nothing that identifies you.
If you sign in with Google
Google gives us your name, email address and profile photo. Your name and photo appear next to things you add publicly.
Things you add
- Perks, edits and photos are public and show your name. Every edit is kept in the public history.
- Reviews and replies are public and show your name. If you’ve claimed that perk, a “Claimed” badge shows on your review.
- Votes, reports, saved perks and claimed perks. Votes count towards public totals, but nobody else sees how you voted or what you saved or claimed, apart from the “Claimed” badge above and the leaderboard if you choose to appear on it.
- Your birthday (day and month, no year) and your planner. Only you can see your plan, unless you turn on a share link. Anyone with that link can see it until you turn it off.
- Optional “about you” answers: relationship status, and how many friends and family usually celebrate with you. We only use these to suggest perks that fit your group, and only you can see them.
Technical logs
Our hosting providers keep standard logs (IP address, browser, pages requested) for security and to fix problems.
How we use it
- To run the site: sign you in, save your planner and show your contributions.
- To keep the site useful and safe: spot spam and abuse, and fix bugs.
- To email you about your account when needed, such as sign-in links. We don’t send marketing emails.
We don’t sell your data, and we don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Cookies and local storage
We only use what the site needs to work: a sign-in session cookie, a language cookie, and a cookie for the birthday you enter before signing in. Your theme and the “visited before” note are kept in your browser’s local storage. Clearing your browser data removes them all.
Who we share it with
These services run parts of the site and handle data on our behalf:
- Supabase: database, sign-in and photo storage (Sydney, Australia)
- Vercel: website hosting (Sydney, Australia, plus its global network)
- Google: sign-in
- Cloudflare: domain name and email forwarding
- Resend: sending emails
So your data is stored outside Malaysia. We chose providers with strong security, and by using the site you agree to this transfer. We may also share data when the law requires it.
Cards marked “Sponsored” link to other websites, and their own privacy policies apply once you’re there. The link tells them you came from BirthdayPerks.my, but nothing about you.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, we delete your profile, birthday, planner, saves, claims, votes, reviews and “about you” answers. Perks, edits and photos you added stay on the site because others rely on them, but your name is removed from them. Server logs are deleted automatically after a short time.
Your rights
Under the PDPA you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, correct it, or withdraw your consent. To delete your account or make any of these requests, email hello@birthdayperks.my from the address you sign in with. We’ll reply within 21 days.
Children
BirthdayPerks.my is for people aged 13 and over. If you’re under 18, ask a parent or guardian before you sign in.
Changes
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll say so on the site.
